If You Removed Adsense From Your Blog, What Would Happen?

Having various blogs all using Adsense or Ezoic I have often wondered what would happen if I removed all ads from them. So that is what I did! For one month I took my most popular blog with over 150,000 views a month and removed ALL ads from it. The thing is Adsense says the fewer ads you show the better your user experience is! (see this post about that) So was it any better? The results we surprising to say the least...

Improvements

Let's start with the good news by telling you there was indeed some improvements. My page speed increased by 20% and some of the in-article affiliate links I have saw a small increase! But that really was about it! But it's not the whole picture...

Disadvantages...

Apart from the lack of any Adsense revenue I also saw a drop in page views! Why? Because I use Adsense "Matched Content" ads so when I removed all the ads I removed my related articles block at the bottom of my posts, meaning when people go to the bottom of the post they just...well...left! Also, I noticed how...sparce the site looked. There were no colourful display ads to break up the page, suddenly it site had lost its magazine style and dare I say it looked pretty empty!

While I could have run this short experiment better and included a related articles plug-in to keep the page flow going it was still surprisingly interesting. Sure, I lost some revenue, but I gained an appreciation for ads as well! Sure, we might all suffer from Ad Blindness, but without them, a blog is a pretty boring place. Well...mine is anyway.
