Does my Site Need to Be HTTPS To Make Money From Adsense?

While the basic answer to this question is 'No' it is certainly not the whole picture. For this post, I will explain what I mean and tell you why you need to change your site to HTTPS as quickly as possible...

Does my Site Need to Be HTTPS To Earn Adsense Revenue?

The answer is no, you can make just the same amount of money from an HTTP site than you can one that is HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure). But here is the problem with that answer... it's not the whole truth! In fact, you will make significantly less money with an HPPT site, but not because of Adsense as it will pay the same per click, per 1000 views than if your site was running in HTTPS. But sadly Googles search engine hates sites without HTTPS and that means almost zero placements in the search engine rankings which means fewer visitors to your site and that also means less Adsense revenue.

So while Adsense doesn't pay you any less it will mean you earn less. How much of a deciding factor it is in the search engine rankings is a discussion best left on SEO blogs, but all I do know is it might mean less Adsense revenue and that is never a good thing. While I have seen reports that HTTPS migration can cause a drop in Adsense revenue I believe that is no longer the case. As always if you have a question about this post or anything else Adsense related do let me know in the comments below.
