You might have Read This Story about Adsense dropping Text only ad blocks. There were a lot of people (myself included) who enjoyed using text-only ads to break up the endless images and colour on the screen. But sadly times change and things move on and so does the shape and style of advertising. For this post, I will tell you why Google dropped this popular ad-unit and why it isn't necessarily a bad thing at all...
Why Did Google Drop Text Only Ads?
While Google themselves has said this “We’re moving towards richer ad formats, phasing out text-only and display-only ad units to further improve user experience, and to fully reflect the pool of ads we have in the market.”, but I am going to get a little more controversial. If you Google search anything (let's say "tasty pizza") then you are presented with only text ads. This is the way search results have always looked. But what is the number of text ads advertisers are buying is dropping? Do you think Google would lower fill rates on their own search results or your blog or website? Ahh, see now you are thinking what I am thinking! Sure, it's just a theory, but its more than possible.
Why Dropping Text-Only Ads in a Good Thing!
At the end of the day, it is ALWAYS banner display ads that earn the most clicks and revenue. It doesn't matter where you put your text ads they will never perform as well as a media-rich display ad will. While I will miss them (and many other Adsense experimenters will) most people won't and that is just a sign of the times.
